“I paint quickly but not in a haphazard manner,” Reid tells. “A lot of practice allows me to know exactly where I want to take a painting and how to get there.”

Reid’s theme, “Reflections,” explores literal and metaphorical contemplation. It was the result of his quest to find a common thread across his many works.

“I just paint what I feel,” he says. “I guess that is why my style seems to flow from impressionist to [photo-realism]. Once I start painting, it is a thrilling rush to get the essence of the subject onto my surface.”

Juror Audrey Hoffer commented on Agony of Defeat that "Life today is so hard for many people but none more so than black men. This man’s shoulders are heaving under the weight of Atlas. He has lost so much although we don’t know what….perhaps a ball game or a fight or a wager or even a job. Maybe he was ridiculed or humiliated. Now he must pull himself together and start anew. His endurance should motivate all of us. I’m touched by the emotions in his figure, the casually strewn objects, his desolate position on the bench and the warm colors. Even though his face is partially obscured, the feelings are intense. He captures the image of a contemporary man."

About Christinas, the judge said, "Beautiful drawing and sparkling shadows of light on the...

Inaugural Wrightsville Beach Plein Air Event

Thirty en plein air artists from around the region descended on Wrightsville Beach Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11, to capture scenes around the island for the inaugural Wrightsville Beach Museum of History en plein air art show and wet paint sale.

Early Friday morning, painters including Christopher Reid, Tesh Parakh and Sue Bark set up their easels to begin working.

Reid, who recently returned to the area, was located just east of the Kenan Creek Bridge, looking out onto the marsh in the heart of Harbor Island. Reid said he did not have a plan where he would paint.

“I didn’t plan ahead where I was going to paint because the light changes all the time so I wanted to go with what was good at the moment,” Reid said. “The sun was just coming up. I got that on there before it changed too much.”

While many of his contemporaries would choose to paint with oils, Reid said he enjoyed using pastels and watercolors.

“I am using pastels because...
