[HERMANUS, WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA, July 1] Pastel art has a rich history and has grown rapidly in popularity in recent years among artists and collectors. Soft pastels resemble chalk sticks and allow artists to paint with pure colour using only their hands. It is an ideal medium for everything from portraits to plein air landscapes.

Artist Christopher Reid has been awarded a Publisher Choice award in the May/June 2016 issue of Art & Beyond Magazine for his painting "Morning Motoring".

Christopher Reid is an internationally recognized artist that paints everything from portraits to landscapes to wildlife. Reid paints in pastel, acrylic, watercolor, and charcoal. His style has been described as contemporary realism with an emphasis on color and depth.

Artist Christopher Reid Wins Best In Show At Top 100 Open Competition

Christopher Reids painting, Marina Reflection, won Best In Show at the International Gallery Of The Arts Top 100 Open Competition. The competition was open to artists in all media, including photography, and all styles.

Artist Christopher Reid Wins Award In Boone Plein Air Paint Out

Artist Christopher Reid won 2nd place in the Howard Street Exchange Plein Air Paint Out in Boone, NC. Reid won with his "Swollen Creek" (acrylic on canvas 20x16) which was painted from right next to his tent while he was camping. The painting was completed in between rain showers and completely en plein air. Reid is know for the presence of water in his paintings. "I am from the beach and when I paint in the mountains I want to really capture the differences in the environment, even if I do keep getting drawn to paint water scenes," he said.

The annual plein air competition is hosted by The Howard Street Exchange, a community art/food/music/business festival for downtown Boone.

Artist Christopher Reid Wins Award At Landfall Show

Artist Christopher Reid won a Best In Category at the Landfall Foundation's 16th Annual Art Show & Sale. The awards ceremony was held Wednesday, August 19th 2015 at the Dye Clubhouse in Landfall. Artist Nicole White Kennedy returned for her 2nd year as judge. The annual exhibit is hosted by the Landfall Foundation with the goal of raising funds for local non-profit groups and creating awareness of our local artists.

Artist Christopher Reid Receives Merit Award

Maria V. Howard Center held an awards ceremony on June 12th, 2015 for their 58th National Juried Multimedia Art Exhibition in Rocky Mount, NC. All media were represented with sculpture, photography, drawing, and painting competing for prizes. Edie Carpenter of Greensboro judged the competition. Among the award winners was Christopher Reid's pastel painting "The Road to Nowhere", which won a Merit Award. Edie Carpenter, Director of Curatorial and Artists Programs at Green Hill Center for NC Art, was this year's judge.

Artist Christopher Reid Wins 2nd In Cary Plein Air Competition

"Scattered Light" 16x20 pastel on paper by Christopher Reid won 2nd in the Town of Cary's 2nd Annual En Plein Air Paint The Town event. The competition was hosted by the Cary Arts Center and featured 43 paintings painted on May 2nd. Oil paintings, watercolors, acrylics, and pastels were represented. Awards were announced at a special gala event on May 29th. A silent auction was held with 20% of sales proceeds were donated to the Town of Cary Relief for Scholarship Fund.

 Reflected Meditations - Christopher Reid Evokes Life In Wilmington In Latest Exhibition

Wilmington artist Christopher Reid works at a rapid pace. His upcoming exhibition, Reflections, will open Jazzcars Gallery, which debuts on the local gallery scene on Friday, May 8. The show will feature more than 100 of Reids works, the bulk of which were done from 2014 through 2015.

I paint quickly but not in a haphazard manner, Reid tells. A lot of practice allows me to know exactly where I want to take a painting and how to get there.

Reids theme, Reflections, explores literal and metaphorical contemplation. It was the result of his quest to find a common thread across his many works.

I just paint what I feel, he says. I guess that is why my style seems to flow from impressionist to [photo-realism]. Once I start painting, it is a thrilling rush to get the essence of the subject onto my surface.

Artist Christopher Reid Wins 2nd In Kinston Plein Air Paint-Out

Artist Christopher Reid won another award this week at the Kinston Plein Air Paint-Out in Kinston, NC. The 3 day event was plagued by rain, but Reid chose to paint outside in the rain in the middle of the night huddled under the awning of a shop. One of his resulting nocturnes, a pastel painting named "Vintage", won 2nd place and immediately sold at the opening of the show.
